Our Charity Work
The owners and staff at Wildschutsberg are active supporters of the Mzamomhle Home Based Care Centre and we ask everyone to help if they can.
Sister Doris Mbiko is an amazing lady, in her 60's, who has dedicated her life to helping the indigent in our community. Five years ago she felt the need to establish a Home Based Care Centre (HBCC) in Sterkstroom, which she called “Mzamomhle Home Based Care Centre”. She has, and still does, feed a lot of hungry people out of her own salary when the need arises. She works night duty as a qualified nursing sister at our local hospital. She sleeps for a couple of hours in the morning and then dedicates the rest of her day to the needs of the Home Based Care Centre and the HIV Wellness Centre.
The Mzamomhle HBCC has been doing fantastic community work over the past 5 years, with virtually no assistance from the government or the Department of Social Development. There 10 voluntary Care Givers who help Sister Doris run the Centre and who work selflessly among the sick and needy in the local community. The care givers do sterling work in the location, where they visit the elderly and the bedridden and help them with whatever they need doing.
The Centre runs a play group in the mornings from 8am to 12.30pm, for needy children (including orphans, aids orphans and children of aids mothers). At the moment we have 23 children, ranging from 6 months to 5 years old, and we feed them breakfast and lunch. Some children from the local school attend the after-care programme, where they also receive something to eat. We are looking for sponsorship for Educare training for two of our young Care Givers, who have Matric Certificates, so that we can give the children the best grounding before they go on to Grade 1.
The Centre offers counselling to People With Aids (PWA's) and has a Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) for rape victims and victims of domestic violence. From the beginning of October 2011 the Department of Social Development has taken over the VEP programme at the Centre, where they share facilities. This is not an ideal situation for the Mzamomhle HBCC. At the moment we are looking around for a more suitable building to house the Centre, as the existing building belongs to the local municipality, who are unwilling to renovate the building, which is derelict and falling down.
At the beginning of 2010 a group of farm ladies felt the need to form a "Friends of Mzamomhle HBCC" to assist Sister Doris and her voluntary care givers. We have had 6 successful meetings since the organisation's inception and we have been instrumental in informing the more financially sound members of our community about the plight of the poorest of the poor in the Sterkstroom district. We have appealed to the surrounding towns too. We have had tremendous support from many people but could do with a lot more.
We appeal to you to please help our Care Centre to keep up their amazing work in our community. Sr Doris and her team are trying very hard to meet the needs of the poor in our community. They need our help.
